Medical Paradigm
I heard a great description -- a bit slanted, but there's a lot of truth to it -- that medicine is coming down to nothing but numbers. You go to your doctor now and you pay for some very expensive tests, and they come back with a set of numbers. If your numbers fall outside of a comfortable range, they will then give you a drug with all kinds of side effects that won't deal with the cause but are merely designed to force that number back into a comfortable range.
